What is Nalmefene (Selincro)?
Nalmefene, marketed under the brand name Selincro®, is a prescription medicine used to help reduce alcohol consumption in adults with alcohol dependence. It is typically used in combination with psychological support and behavioural therapy.
Nalmefene works by modulating the brain’s reward system. It blocks certain opioid receptors involved in the pleasurable effects of alcohol, helping reduce the urge to drink and making alcohol less rewarding. This can support long-term behavioural change in people motivated to cut down.
It is taken on an as-needed basis — usually 1 to 2 hours before the anticipated time of drinking — and not as a daily medicine. It is particularly beneficial for those who do not require immediate detoxification but want to reduce their alcohol intake over time.
Nalmefene is not suitable for everyone and should be prescribed after a full clinical assessment. It is intended for people with a high drinking risk level who do not have physical withdrawal symptoms and who do not require immediate abstinence.
